Better fundamental understanding of the interactions between the in-cylinder flows and combustion process is an important requirement for further improvement in the fuel economy and emissions of internal combustion (IC) engines. Laser diagnostics is one of the best ways to investigate the combustion process and emission formation as it is non-intrusive and it has high spatiotemporal resolution. Flow near a spark plug at the time of ignition plays an important role for early flame kernel development (EFKD). Velocity data measurements can be made with a LDV near a spark plug in a optical spark ignition (SI) engine with combustion chamber. An LDV system can be used to obtain accurate airflow measurements around scale models of passenger cars in wind tunnel tests. Mean airflow velocities and turbulence intensities are calculated to evaluate the flow fields. The system is not only capable of measuring the mean velocity components, including reverse flow, it can also provide accurate estimation of turbulence components.
